Tension, a large-scale, site-specific installation within an industrial warehouse in Red Hook.
Tension spans over 20,000 square feet and amasses 11,000 feet of yellow latex stretched
back-and-forth across each of it’s structural concrete pillars. As with many of La Piana’s
In smaller-scale works, tension pushes the capabilities of a static material by testing its infinite tensile strength and expandability.
Beyond the physical characteristics of tension, La Piana draws a parallel between the
psychological and emotional boundaries of human kind testing one’s infinite capacity. In
In addition to activating the material, there is an audio of snapping bands reminding the
viewer that both the installation and the environment have been activated and brought
to life. While remaining entirely unique to La Piana, the tension created in the warehouse recalls the experience of Lygia Pape’s Tteia I, C (Web) installation.
